There is a hole cut in the floor so that you can access the loft using the ladder. If you're 100% certain that you weren't falling through that hole, then it's probably just your game lagging. Restart the game and I guarantee it won't happen again
Car, duhh. It's less work than the main door, it's cooler than the main door, and you get a free car from a lady who kidnapped you. In fact, I bet she's thinking "karma's a b1tch" as she watches you escape. Breaking past the wall beyond the garage door even has a cooler soundtrack than the plain old front door escape, which, by the way, we're all bored with because it's been around since version 1.0.
