— Granny |
Granny is the titular main antagonist of Granny, Granny: Chapter Two, and Granny 3. She also appears as an optional secondary antagonist in The Twins.
Granny is known for trapping people in her property and forcing them to play a game where they are given five days to escape the house while she hunts them down. Every time they get caught, they are knocked out by her baseball bat, and wake up on the next day. And, if they fail to escape in time, they are executed. Granny's usual method of capturing her next victim is searching for a person stuck in the forest she inhabits, knocking them out with her signature baseball bat, and bringing them inside.
During gameplay, Granny functions as an enemy the player has to evade by hiding and luring away, or get chased by her and risk getting caught. She places bear traps around her property to obstruct her victims' path, and know their presence near them when closed. Granny checks on certain noises the player makes, from any point on the map, like when dropping an item, stepping on a creaky floorboard, etc. The player can combat Granny with weapons found on the map, most of which knock her out for a set period of time, after which she reappears in another place on the map.
Description
Granny's origin, and what she actually is, is unknown. Her glowing eyes, apparent immortality, and relationship with the ghost of Slendrina, imply a tie to the supernatural. But the appearance of Grandpa in Granny: Chapter Two and her being mentioned in Granny 3 play store description as being Slendrina's grandmother imply that she once was a human.
It is possible that Granny may be or has indulged in cannibalism, as shown by the blood splatters belonging to the previous victim scattered throughout her house, and her jumpscare animation in the basement game over scene, where she lunges at the Player with her mouth wide open, possibly eating him alive.
Appearance
Granny is represented as an ugly, demented old woman. She has a long, dirty face, some gray hair at the back of her head, glowing white eyes surrounded with a bloody rim, and her teeth. She has a dirty gray nightgown. She also holds a bloody baseball bat which she shows no hesitation towards using as a weapon.
When playing on Nightmare mode, Granny looks grimmer and uglier and heavily decayed, as her skin becomes black, dirty and chipped, and her dress is much darker, and has more stains.
In Christmas versions, she always wears a conventional Christmas hat on her head, with no changes to her general appearance.

Behavior
When a new day starts, Granny first appears in one of her spawning locations, spending a few seconds there before moving:
- Basement, on the bloodstain
- Bedroom 2, in the corner between the table and the chest of drawers
- Living Room, at the wall next to the TV table
- Secret Area Middle Floor, between the two stairways
Granny begins her movement by slowly wandering around the house, until she is made aware of the Player being awake, which is caused by either:
- Environmental hazards or dropping items, which makes her immediately move to the exact location of the last interaction with them. At the spot, she looks around for a few seconds, and after not noticing the Player, she starts wandering again.
- Seeing the Player, which makes her enter the chase mode, where her only focus is finding the quickest way towards them. This lasts until she can't do so anymore after the Player is hidden for enough time, after which she starts wandering again.
- Holding teddy or killing a pet, which makes her constantly chase after the Player and turn her eyes red. Granny's rage mode lasts until the player lets go of teddy, knocks her out; or goes to the next day, in case they killed one of Granny's pets.
Each time Granny leaves a spot after unsuccessfully searching for the Player, she always plays a voice track, and after wandering for about 10 seconds, stops and lays a bear trap, then changes waypoints.
Granny catches the Player once they are in close enough proximity to her. Once they are caught, they are forced to face her and shortly get knocked out by her baseball bat. This makes the player to move onto the next day, waking up back in the Starting Bedroom.
If Granny spots the Player going under a bed, inside a cabinet, a chest, or the car, she notices it and catch them even so. In most cases, by getting them out of their hiding spot, and attacking them with the baseball bat; in the case of the beds, she attacks them by dropping to the ground and lunging at them while making a loud screeching noise.
Granny's range of eyesight, which triggers her chase mode once seeing the player depends on a few factors:
- The chosen difficulty — The lower the game's difficulty is, the lower her base eyesight range is.
- Crouching — While the Player crouches, her eyesight range is significantly lower (doesn't work in 1.8).
- Crawl spaces — While the Player is in one of them, Granny is almost completely blind to the Player's presence (doesn't work in 1.8). When Granny sees the Player get into one of them, she'll wait at the closest end of it for them to come out.
Defense Against Granny
When hit with a tranquilizer dart, locked in the active sauna for 15 seconds, run over by the car or frozen by the freeze trap, Granny is knocked out for a set period of time. It lasts for 2 minutes, 1 minute, 30 seconds or 15 seconds depending on the difficulty the player is playing on.
If Granny is shot with the shotgun or is caught in the gasoline can explosion, she is knocked out for 30 extra seconds with the exception of Extreme mode, which only grants 15 extra seconds.
Wandering

The map of the in-game house, showing all of Granny's waypoints
Granny wanders using waypoints located around the map. A waypoint is chosen completely at random upon spawning, losing track of the Player, leaving investigation of a noise, or finishing standing at another waypoint. When a waypoint is chosen, Granny finds the quickest way to it, and walks there until she reaches it, hears a noise, or spots the Player. Not every part of the map contains a waypoint, making such locations safe if no noise is made there. Some locations, such as the foyer, have to be wandered through in order to get to multiple different waypoints, meaning Granny wanders there more commonly; others, such as the Secret Area's bottom floor, are a dead end with only one waypoint, meaning Granny wanders there rarely, as she would have to choose that waypoint out of all the others.
Speed
Granny's moving and animation speeds depend on her current movement type and game difficulty. For the ease of comparison, the Player's maximum speed is 6.0.
Movement type | Speed value | Comparison to the Player | Animation speed |
---|---|---|---|
Wandering | 1.2 | 80% Slower | 0.9 |
Chase (Easy) | 3.0 | 50% Slower | 1.5 |
Chase (Normal) | 4.3 | 28.33% Slower | 2.0 |
Chase (Hard) | 5.0 | 16.67% Slower | 2.7 |
Chase (Extreme) | 7.0 | 16.67% Faster | 3.3 |

Trivia
- DVloper confirmed that Granny is voiced by his wife.[1] However, the old voice tracks ("All I wanted to do was play with you", "Don't be afraid" and "Do you wanna play hide and seek?") were sourced from Lara Sluyter.[2] DVloper had not included credit for her, up to this day.
- Granny's name is not "Diana" as Diana is the name of a woman that was in a song Grandpa was singing!
- Granny's scream when she catches the Player comes from the movie Insidious: Chapter 2.[3]
- The Christmas Hat found on Granny's Christmas model was a free asset on Unity Asset Store called Ultimate Hat: Santa.[4]
- The same hat also used by Grandpa, Slendrina and Slendrina's Child.
- There is an unused animation for Granny called "WalkArms" in the game files which is a zombie-like walk animation that was scrapped.[5]
- There is an Easter egg in The Twins, of a poster found behind a painting of diamonds, showing Granny with little hearts all around her.
- Granny is the fourth character with most appearances, as she appears in 4 of DVloper games.
- Prior to Version 1.7.9.3, Granny would always spawn in the basement at the start of the game.
- On the PC port, on Day 1, Granny's eyes always seem to be gray. This can change to bright white on Days 2-5 when Granny kills the player or when you let go of the Teddy.
- It's unknown whether DVloper added this code intentionally or unintentionally. Same thing happens in Granny Chapter Two, when Grandpa or Granny kills you.
- This feature was added ever since the first release on the PC port.
- Interestingly, Granny will even run towards the sound made by herself (ex. knocking over a Plank). This suggests that she is "a bit stupid".
- This is most likely an oversight of her AI.
- Just like her daughter, she is crazy.
- DVloper said She eats human flesh sometimes and sometimes not.
- It is said by DVloper that she hunts people because they invade her territory.
- As seen in her bed jumpscare, she is capable of reaching high speeds by dropping on the floor, bending her limbs in a spider-like manner, and crawling.
