The Spider Cellar is an underground, maze-like area with many crouching spaces. It is heavily guarded by Spider Mom, who chases the Player, once spotted, for as long as she can reach them. It is necessary to use the Spider Key to unlock access to this area legitimately.

Description

The Spider Cellar area is large and resembles a maze and a sewer combined. It is located below the house, at elevation close to the garage. It can be accessed by using the Spider Key on a trapdoor in the living room, which opens a route that leads inside the area.

The walls in the Spider Cellar are made of beige stone bricks covered in mold and gunk, while the floor and the ceiling are made of chipped stone, overgrown with lichen. Unlike the rest of the house, the Spider Cellar is poorly lit, and some parts of it remain dark. In Nightmare mode, the whole place gets desaturated and coated in blood, especially the lower parts of the walls.

Layout

There are multiple rooms in this area, every single one of them functioning as a hiding place from Spider Mom.

There are 4 rooms which contain a single, dirty white cupboard. Two of them are always accessible, and the other two are in rooms locked behind iron bars which require the Wheel Crank to lift.

For the Wheel Crank, there is a hallway that leads to the Wheel Crank Tunnel, a little crouch space with a stub inside it. Placing the Wheel Crank on the stub will lift the iron bars, thus getting access to the remaining cupboards.

A notable room is the Pipe Room, which is located far from the entrance. This room has two doorways, a Screwdriver Safe, and the Escape Pipe, which requires only 3 items to open and therefore escape the house.

Next to the Pipe Room is the elevator. It doesn't require crouching to enter, but its sliding door can still protect you from Spider Mom. The Elevator is used to bring the Player up to the Chest Room, an isolated room with a single item locked behind a puzzle with two chests.

There is also a long hallway with a shelf at the end of it. Spider Mom is able to catch the Player even while they are hiding under it.

Trivia

  • The cupboard #2 is at a lower height than the other cabinets in version 1.3 of the PC release.
  • The iron bars in the Spider Cellar actually have an animation while lifting up, as soon as the Wheel Crank is inserted on the stub in the Wheel Crank Tunnel. Though, it can't be seen during unmodified gameplay due to their animation ending by the time the Player can reach them.
  • Spider Mom can access the section locked behind the iron bars even while they are lowered. Though, this doesn't happen during unmodified gameplay as it only happens when the Player makes her chase them into there.
  • Many fans have referred to this area as a sewer due to the water in the Spider Cellar Tunnel, as well as the gunk and lichens on the walls of this area.
  • This is the only area in the game that changes ambience music.
    • Furthermore, it is the fourth area to have a different ambience sound.
  • This is the only full area in the game that Granny and the spectral rats can't access.
  • There are many items that initially spawned in the kitchen that were moved to this area.
  • The texture for the walls in this area were recycled from The Twins, albeit this game mostly does not use stylized textures.
  • The PC version of the game allows the plater to glitch into the Spider Cellar from the Secret Area Tunnel as shown in this video due to differently scripted crouch mechanics.
